Why ground transport is the usual answer here

Chicago is about four hundred miles from us which takes about six and a half hours, most of it a straight run west. Springfield and Peoria are a little further, Rockford a little further still, but the whole state sits within one leg of driving.

That distance is the reason ground is the default for Illinois. Depending on where you fall on the route, it's often same-day and sometimes next-day, either way it isn't the multi-day trip with overnight stops that the same service becomes at greater distances. We'll tell you which one yours is when we have the dates.

Ground transport is $300 to $600. A professional pet transport service runs it in a climate-controlled vehicle. No airport, no terminal, no carrier under an airline seat. Your puppy is checked on, walked, watered, and brought to you.

Timing still depends on the route, the service runs planned routes rather than one-off trips, so how soon Illinois comes up varies week to week. Once we know your go-home window we'll get you the actual dates rather than guessing.

Personal flight nanny is generally $850 to $1,650. Still available, and worth it if you need a date you can plan around. Your puppy travels in the cabin, in a carrier under the seat, with someone whose only job that day is your puppy. Usually into O'Hare or Midway. The main thing it buys you at this distance is certainty. The date is fixed the moment it's booked.

Or come and get them. Six and a half hours each way is a long day, but it's a real one, and some Illinois families do drive out. You can meet the parents. Home visits are by appointment, any day but Sunday, so call or text before you set out.

Neither transport option uses a cargo hold. It's the part of long-distance pet transport that goes wrong for people, and we've taken it out of the equation entirely.

Winter is the one thing that moves dates

Worth saying out loud, because it comes up. The route to Illinois runs straight through the belt that gets shut down by lake-effect snow and ice a few times each winter. When that happens, a ground transport date moves.

We'd rather move it than send a nine-week-old puppy through it. If your go-home window lands between December and February and you need a firm date with your travel plans, time booked off work etc the flight nanny is the more reliable choice. Say so when you reserve and we'll plan around it.

The paperwork Illinois wants, and one thing we need from you

Illinois is more specific than most states about what has to travel with a dog, and one part of it affects you directly.

We need your full address before your puppy travels. Illinois requires the certificate of veterinary inspection to name the complete destination address in the state. That means our vet can't issue the paperwork until we have exactly where your puppy is going.

The certificate must be issued within 30 days of entry and show your puppy's age, sex, breed and description. Illinois applies this to dogs of any age, so there's no puppy exemption. We arrange it, and we file the copy Illinois requires.

No advance permit is needed. Illinois doesn't require prior approval of an interstate certificate, so there's nothing to apply for ahead of time.

Rabies applies at 16 weeks in Illinois. Your puppy comes home at nine weeks, so that one goes on your vet's calendar rather than ours.

Our contract asks you to have your own vet see the puppy within 72 hours or three business days of arrival. Book that before travel day, not after.

Reading the paperwork from four hundred miles away

You might not make the drive, and you shouldn't have to in order to know what you're getting. Both parents' OFA results hips, eyes, heart, and patella as well as their genetic panels are on their own pages. You can read them before you spend a dollar.

Most Illinois families do a video call with us and with the litter before reserving. If you'd rather come out, you're more than welcome but nothing about reserving from Illinois requires it.
